When trying to decide on a pair of false eyelashes, you want to start by determining your eye shape.  Your particular eye shape may fall squarely within one of these categories or may be a combination of two or more categories.   All eye shapes are unique and beautiful and able to wear false eyelashes.

Eye Shape Chart for false eyelashes

EYE SHAPE CATEGORIES

Upturned Eyes:  Upturned eyes, often called “smiling eyes” have outer corners that naturally point upwards.  An easy way to determine whether you have this eye shape is look into a mirror and imagine there is a straight line going across the center of your eyes.  If the outer corners of your eyes fall above this imaginary line, then you likely have upturned eyes.

Downturned Eyes:  Downturned eyes, often referred to as “bedroom eyes” have outer corners that naturally point downwards, towards your cheekbones.  An easy way to determine whether you have this eye shape is look into a mirror and imagine there is a straight line going across the center of your eyes.  If the outer corners of your eyes fall below this imaginary line, then you may have downturned eyes.

Monolid Eyes:  Also known as an epicanthic fold, a monolid is a skin fold on the upper eyelid that makes it appear that there’s no visible crease line below your brow area.  To determine whether you have this eye shape look into the mirror. If you do not see a crease then you probably have monolid eyes.

Hooded Eyes:  Hooded eyes refers to eyes that have excess skin at the browbone which may partially or fully obscure the eyelid when the eye is fully open.  You can be born with this eye shape or it can develop over time.  To determine whether you have hooded eyes, look into a mirror and completely open your eyes.  If most or all of your eyelid is covered by the skin under your browbones, then you likely have hooded eyes.

Almond Eyes:  Almond eyes have a visible crease and an iris that extends past both the upper and lower eyelids.  In other words, you cannot see the whites of the eye above or below the iris.  To determine whether you have almond eyes, look straight ahead into a mirror.  If you have a visible crease and your iris touches both your top and bottom eyelid, you may have almond eyes. You can also imagine a straight line going across the center of your eyes.  If the other corners of your eyes are at the line and not above or below, you likely have almond eyes.

Round Eyes:  Round eyes have an overall round shape (which you could probably tell from the name).  To determine if your eye shape is round, look straight ahead into a mirror.  If you can see the white of your eye below the iris then you probably have a round eye shape.

EYE POSITION CATEGORIES

Deep Set Eyes:  If your eyes sit farther back, or deeper in the eye socket and the ends of your natural eyelashes tend to touch the tops of your eyelids, you likely have deep set eyes.

Protruding Eyes:  Protruding Eyes refers to eyes that are large and round shaped, with a deep crease and the appearance of projected lids.

Close Set Eyes: Close set eyes are less than one eyeball width apart.

Wide Set Eyes: Wide set eyes are more than one eyeball width apart.

THE BEST FALSE EYELASHES FOR EACH SHAPE:

Upturned Eyes:  If you have upturned eyes, you may want to look for a flared lash with fibers that are shorter at the inner corners and longer at the outer corners to enhance your natural eye shape and create a glamorous cat eye look.  For natural look, we recommend Cupcake Lashes or Cotton Candy Lashes.  For a more dramatic or bold look, try Cakepop Lashes or Sundae Lashes.

Downturned Eyes:  Those with downturned eyes, will probably like a rounder shaped lash as opposed to a flared style.  Look for lashes that have fibers that are a consistent length from edge to edge or are longer in the center than at the ends.  For a more natural look, try Ice Cream Soda Lashes. For a more dramatic look, check out Tiramisu Lashes.

Monolid Eyes:  Try looking for fluttery lashes with a rounded shape if you have monolid eyes.  For a really lowkey look, check out Gelato Lashes.  For a daytime look, you might like Ice Cream Soda Lashes.  If you want to glam it up, try Marshmallow Lashes.

Hooded Eyes: If you have hooded eyes, try lashes that have long fluttery lash fibers with a lot of length at the center of the eye. Try Cupcake Lashes, Sundae Lashes or Tiramisu Lashes.

Almond Eyes: This eye shape tends to be pretty versatile.  To create a cat eye effect, try Cupcake Lashes, Cakepop Lashes, Buttercream Lashes or Sundae Lashes.

Round Eyes: If you have a round eye shape, you may like a lighter wispy lash.  Consider Cotton Candy Lashes or Cupcake Lashes for a more natural look and Sundae Lashes or Buttercream Lashes for when you are feeling more glamorous.

Deep Set Eyes:  Those with deep set eyes might prefer lashes with longer lash fibers. Try Sundae Lashes or Marshmallow Lashes.

Protruding Eyes:  Try looking for lashes with a lot of volume if you have protruding eyes.  For a subtle look, try Gelato Lashes or Ice Cream Soda Lashes.  For more drama, try Marshmallow Lashes or Tiramisu Lashes.

Close Set Eyes:  Those with close set eyes may prefer a flared lash shape. Try Cupcake Lashes, Cakepop Lashes or Buttercream Lashes.

Wide Set Eyes:  If you have wide set eyes, you may prefer a more voluminous lash with a round shape. Try Gelato Lashes or Ice Cream Soda Lashes for a natural look, and Tiramisu Lashes or Marshmallow Lashes for a more dramatic look.

We hope you found these guidelines helpful, but remember when it comes to beauty the only rule is wear what you love.  Feel free to use this list as a guide, but if you have questions, text or call us at (916) 407-4200. You can also take our interactive lash quiz for personalized recommendations.

We also recommend that after you have determined your eye shape, try googling “celebrities with _________” and insert your eye shape.  For example, I would google “celebrities with hooded eyes.” No matter which eye shape you have, you will find that you are in good company.
